Security force kills more than 100 people in Amhara, Debre Markos city

Security forces in one of Amhara region city killed more than 100 people in a week.

More than 100 people were killed in Debre Markos, the capital city of the East Gojam zone, from Friday to Monday, August 2023.

An anonymous doctor at the Debremarkos Specialized Hospital said that more than a hundred people were killed during a fight between national defence forces and Fano militants.

Residents and doctors told Addis Maleda that the bodies of the deceased were found lying on the road without being picked up for more than two days.

“Some people picked up the bodies that fell on the spot, both Muslims and Christians, and buried them in and around Maryam Church, but they were not buried until Monday,”  said the residents.

Although there were a few people who were injured and went to the hospital during the three days of fighting in the city.

Due to the lack of transport, the doctor said that many people lost their lives to take the wounded to the hospital.

The manager of Debremarkos General Specialized Hospital Andualem Geremew said that 25 people were injured and hospitalized from Friday, August 25 to Monday, August 27, 2023, “Three of them died instantly”  He said.

The manager added, “the people who were injured in the shooting and entered the hospital and died are people aged between 17 and 50 years old”.

He also said that, due to the ongoing fighting in the area, “our experts could not move and work as they wanted, and patients are not being treated in the hospital.”

Following this, the manager said that people with non-communicable diseases are not being treated at the facility.  “Since we are facing a shortage of drugs, if the security problem continues like this, the hospital will be in big trouble,”  he added.

In addition to Debremarkos General Specialized Hospital, they mentioned that there are eight neighbouring primary hospitals. The patients who need referral treatment are facing problems due to lack of transport services and they cannot come to our hospital.

There was no movement of people or vehicles in Debre Markos during the last four days of the conflict between the government security forces and Fano militants.

We have heard from residents that heavy fighting is still going on between the national defence and Fano in many areas of the Amhara region.

Since yesterday, it has been reported that innocent citizens were shot and killed in their homes in Debretabor town of South Gondar zone Amhara region.

Debre Tabor Hospital was hit by a heavy weapon and two patients died, the resident said in a phone interview.

The House of People’s Representatives has declared a six-month state of emergency in the Amhara region.

Although the region is under the control of the military leadership, the regional council elected Mr. Argega Kebede as the war-torn region’s president last week.

The UN expressed its concern about the deteriorating human rights situation in some regions of Ethiopia.

In the Amhara region, following a flare-up in clashes between the Ethiopian military and the regional Fano militia, and the declaration of a state of emergency on 4 August, the situation worsened considerably.

At least 183 people have been killed in clashes since July, according to information gathered by the UN Human Rights Office.

The wide-ranging state of emergency gives the authorities broad powers nationwide, to arrest suspects without a court order, impose curfews and ban public gatherings.
