The Council of Ministers approved the draft Ethiopian Digital Identity Proclamation yesterday on August 14, 2022.
Ethiopian Digital Identity System, according to the issued document, means a reliable identity authentication system that serves to identify and authenticate an individual by recording the individual’s biographic and biometric information into a central database and assigning them a unique number. This makes transparency and accountability easier to achieve among businesses.
It will encourage and complement innovation in areas where knowing your customer and improving product traceability is a requirement or an attractive feature.
Experts even say that incorporating the digital economy would have been difficult without a proper digital identity proclamation. Without a doubt, this action will hasten the expansion of e-commerce platforms and other technologically enabled businesses. While the National Special Economic Zone Strategy was also approved for implementation in the same session, the next step will be approving the draft Personal Data Protection Proclamation.
