Flooding caused by the overflow of the Logiya River has left at least three people dead in Afar region of Ethiopia on Sunday.
Semera Logiya city Police today confirmed the deaths, adding that emergency responders are deployed at the scene, located some 388 kilometers northeast of Addis Ababa.
Logiya River, which flows from central and joins the Awash River, first started to flow over its banks on sunday afternoon following a heavy rain in the city.
However, it was a heavy rains occurred in the highlands that later resulted in the flooding, causing the river to flow over the Djibouti Road for most of the night.
Police said three residents were washed away by the flood while trying to cross the road and were confirmed dead, according to state news agency ENA.
Emergency workers and police are working on search and rescue operations in case of missing people.
Eight travelers were rescued from two vehicles caught in the rising waters and later submerged.
Heavy rainfall during Ethiopia’s main Kiremt season (June to September), triggers flooding and at times becomes deadly in lowland areas of the country, including Afar Region.
