Building Collapse Kills 6 People Merkato area of Addis Ababa

At least six people were died and several others injured after a building in Addis Ababa’s biggest market area collapsed, police said on Saturday.

The front side of the building located around “Mehal Merkato” collapsed on Saturday afternoon.

At least six people lost their lives and an unknown number of people also sustained injuries due to the accident, said the Addis Ababa City police.

The injured people were taken to a hospital for treatment.

According to the police, an investigation has been launched to know what caused the deadly accident.

The old building, owned by the Federal Housing Corporation, has been serving both as a warehouse and market space for many years.

After expressing its “sincere condolences” to victims of the accident and their families, the Corporation said it has formed a task force to work with the police and other government offices.

This is the second deadly accident to happen in the capital in the last thirty days. On July 31, a side of a big warehouse fell down on adjacent residential houses, seriously injuring three people. One of the injured three, later, passed away in the hospital.
