Comdr. Derartu Tulu, the legendary Ethiopian athlete, has been recognized with the 2022 ‘Special Bego Sew Award’.
The 10th Bego Sew Awards ceremony has taken place today in Addis Ababa during which Derartu received the special award from President Sahle-Work Zewde.
The annual Bego Sew Awards recognize people who made greater contributions to Ethiopia and serve as role models for its citizens.
Athlete Derartu received the Special Award for her remarkable leadership role as President of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation in the concluding 2014 Ethiopian calendar.
The recognition for the head of the Athletics sport governing body in Ethiopia comes weeks after the senior and junior Athletics teams registered impressive results at the global stages.
The senior team finished second in the World Athletics Championships at Oregon 2022, while the junior team concluded the U-20 World Athletics Championship in CALI 2022, ranking third on the medal table.
Apart from the special award, winners of the 10th Bego Sew Awards under nine categories were announced.
