The final phase of the Bahir Dar National Stadium construction has begun today as authorities bid to make the venue up to international standards.
The second and final phase of the construction was officially launched on Tuesday in a program attended by Amhara regional state president Yilikal Kefyale.
The second phase, which will cost over 1.07 billion Birr, is scheduled to complete within a year.
The contract for this final phase was awarded to Midroc Construction. MH Engineering will serve as a consultant.
The regional administration has allocated 700 million Birr for the final stage of the construction of the stadium.
Midroc Investment Group will cover the remaining 300 million Birr.
Among others, the activities in the second phase will feature upgrading the playing field standard, installing seats, and building rooms for meeting and away team rooms, and many more.
Having these facilities is expected to make the Bahir Dar national stadium regain the hosting rights of international games.
The stadium is currently banned by Confederation of African Football (CAF) from hosting international matches after its inspectors found the facility unfit in October 2021.
The ban on the Stadium has forced the Ethiopian national team to play their home matches abroad.
The region’s president Yilikal said his administration will do what’s required to enable the stadium to fulfill the requirements of FIFA and resume hosting international games as soon as possible.
Bahir Dar Stadium, though it’s not yet complete, is currently the largest stadium in Ethiopia with a seating capacity of 50,000.
