Ethiopia allocates 50 billion birr for national defense

Out of the total federal government budget of 801 billion birr for the 2016 fiscal year, 50 billion birr has been allocated to the Ministry of Defense, and 20 billion birr has been earmarked for the restoration of institutions and services destroyed in the war in northern Ethiopia.

In the 2015 fiscal year, the share of the total budget of the Ministry of Defense have reached more than 120 billion birr.

Following the resolution of the Northern War by the Pretoria Peace Agreement, the Ministry of Defense has allocated 50 billion birr for the 2016 fiscal year.

The document also indicates that 20 billion birr has been earmarked for the restoration of the infrastructure destroyed by war in northern Ethiopia from the proposed budget for the next fiscal year.

For the 2016 fiscal year, 214 billion birr has been allocated for regional subsidies.

And also 12.5 billion Birr has been allocated to the Tigray region, which received the above budget subsidy from the federal government, for the next fiscal year.

As always, Oromia, Amhara and Southern regions take the largest share of the budget reserved for regional subsidies.

Oromia one of the largest region tales 71.9 billion Birr, 45.1 billion Birr for Amhara and 26.9 billion Birr for south Ethiopia region respectively.

In addition, Somali Region 20.8 billion birr, Southwest Ethiopia People’s Region 6.4 billion birr, Sidama Region 8.5 billion birr have been presented in the draft budget.

Similarly; 6.3 billion birr for Afar region, 3.8 billion birr for Benshangul region, 2.7 billion birr for Gambella region, 1.5 billion birr for Hareri population region, 5.2 billion birr for Addis Ababa city and 1.8 billion birr for Dredawa city.
