Hundreds of Sudanese Strands in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region

More than a thousand Sudanese are stranded in Gondar and Bahirdar cities.

A state of emergency was declared in the Amhara region, because of the war that started a week ago.

Due to the civil war in Sudan, Sudanese citizens who came to Ethiopia with the intention of seeking better security were told that they are in trouble.

In particular, Sudanese who stayed in hotels in Gondar and Bahirdar said, we are facing problems with food, security and transportation.

These Sudanese travellers, who told us that their number is more than one thousand, said that they plan to come to Addis Ababa through Metema and then travel to Saudi Arabia and other countries.

The Sudanese, especially those who took shelter in the hotels in Gondar and Bahirdar cities, also faced various problems after entering the Ethiopian border through Matema.

Because of the war in Sudan, Ethiopia is the only route to travel abroad and these Sudanese said that we have legal travel documents and not refugees.

Therefore, they asked the Ethiopian government or the Red Cross to evacuate them from the Gondar and Bahir Dar war zone.

Ethiopian Red Cross has announced that it has started activities to support citizens affected by the war and conflict in the Amhara region.

According to the organization, it holds discussions with the different parties and the victims can get humanitarian support.

The Red Cross urged the warring parties to respect the international laws of the Red Cross and human rights conventions.

The Red Cross Society added that, in the following days, it will release information about the ways in which it can help people who are in need of help around the conflict-affected areas.

Local and foreign organizations are calling for an end to the war that started in the Amhara region and to solve their differences through dialogue.

According to IOM Ethiopia, as of 5 August 2023, over 72,000 people have arrived in Ethiopia through multiple border crossing points in Amhara, Benishangul Gumz, and Gambella Regions.
