Ethiopia and Tanzania commences Electricity export deal

Ethiopian Electric Power announced that negotiations are underway with its Tanzanian counterpart.

The organization plans to earn 30 billion birr from the sale of electricity from domestic and foreign countries in 2023/2024.

According to the Director of Communication of Ethiopian Electric Power, Mr Moges Mekonen, told the Ethiopian Press agency, In the current fiscal year, more than 2993 gigawatts of electricity will be exported.

Three neighbouring East African countries, namely Sudan, Kenya and Djibouti planned to earn $182 million or 10 billion birr by exporting 2993 gigawatts of electricity.

Mr. Moges also said that it is planned to earn 20 billion birr from the sale of electricity to domestic customers.

In the past Ethiopian fiscal year 2015, 22 billion birr was earned from electricity sold by local customers and neighbouring countries.

Ethiopia is planning to sell more electricity to neighbouring countries, and negotiations are underway with Tanzania.

The director added that if the agreement between Ethiopia and Tanzania is completed on time, the power will be sent to Dar es Salaam this year.

In addition to Tanzania, Ethiopia’s electricity company has announced plans to sell electricity to South Sudan and Somalia in the coming years.

Only 52 percent of Ethiopians have access to electricity and the government is being criticized as to why electricity is being sent to neighboring countries without domestic demand being met.

Ethiopian Electric Power, on the other hand, sends power to neighbouring countries during the hours when operations stop, especially at night, and the sale is to solve the shortage of foreign currencies faced by the government.
