Militant kills Hundreds of civilians in Amhara-Oromia border

Districts located in the northern Shewa zone bordering the Oromia and Amhara regions are being repeatedly attacked by Oromia liberation militants.

The district called Dera is an area that is frequently attacked by the militants and 300 innocent citizens were killed by the militants in just three weeks.

The Oromia liberation militant was classified as a terrorist organization by the House of Representatives three years ago and the government claims that it is taking measures to destroy this terrorist group, but the group continues to attack.

A resident of Dera district, who did not wish to be named, told Addis Maleda, “In three weeks, more than 300 innocent people have been killed by militants.”  When they are  Stating that this is the correct information he has and he’s sure that the death toll may rise.

The same reliable source explained that they are following the situation closely; they have a list of more than 80 dead.

Other residents of the district stated that the attack started at the end of September and the attack is still going on.

More than 20 areas in Dera district are under the control of the same terrorist group and more than 10 thousand people have been displaced.

The eyewitnesses stated that people kidnapped by the armed group were asked to pay up to 1 million birr and they were released.  However, it is said that an unknown number of hostages who failed to pay the demanded money were killed.

The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission has announced that it has received a tip-off that militants are killing and kidnapping innocent people in various areas of Oromia, including Dera district.

The North Shewa Zone and the regional government didn’t respond to the matter in the media.

At the same time, in the city of Dukem, which is 20 kilometres away from Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, the government security forces and the Oromo liberation militants are fighting, according to Wazema Radio. The security situation in Ethiopia is getting worse from time to time and a state of emergency has been declared for six months after the Fano militants took control of many places in the Amhara region
