Ethiopian Human Rights Council urges the government to stop kidnapping by militants

The Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRC) has stated that the government didn’t pay attention to the kidnapping made by the militants.

EHRC stated that in addition to Ethiopians, foreign nationals are also being kidnapped in the Oromia region.

Attacks and obstructions by militants in various areas, especially in the Oromia region, neither the federal government nor the regional state governments have paid enough attention to EHRC in his statement.

EHRC announced that the attacks being carried out by armed groups against citizens of the country as well as foreigners in various parts of the country are increasing.

“The government’s responsibility to protect the citizens’ safety is not being fulfilled properly. When citizens are kidnapped, their right to live, their physical safety, to be protected from torture or other cruel treatment or punishment, and other human rights are violated,” EHRC said in its, statement.

He also announced that the kidnapping had prevented citizens from moving from place to place and from doing their daily work properly.

Because the areas where the kidnappings are made are often known to be the places where the abductions are made, no permanent solution has been provided;  People living in the area as well as people moving around are victims of kidnapping, the human rights body said.

In his statement, EHRC called on the government security agencies at the federal and state levels to provide adequate protection to the community and arrange a way for them to be free from threats.

A month ago, the workers of Aluto langano Geothermal Steam Power Plant were kidnapped by militants.

These people, who are the employees of Ethiopian Electric Power, would not be released if they did not pay the ransom money, and their current situation has not been clarified yet.

Oromia and Federal Governments have deployed security forces and are taking action against the Oromo Liberation Front militants, who have been classified as terrorists by the House of People’s Representatives in 2020.
