Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Reshuffles Security and Diplomatic Cabinet

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced a series of significant changes to Ethiopia’s security and diplomatic portfolios, introducing new appointments to the House of Representatives for approval.

Temesgen Tiruneh, formerly the Director of National Security, has been appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister, while Taye Atsikeselasie, the former Ethiopian permanent representative to the United Nations, assumes the role of Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Additionally, Dr. Makdes Daba replaces Dr. Lia Tadese as Minister of Health, following her resignation.

Redwan Hussain, previously serving as a security adviser to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, has been appointed as the Director General of the National Intelligence and Security Service.

Ambassador Redwan Hussain brings a wealth of experience, having served in various diplomatic roles including as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Eritrea and Ireland, as well as State Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Tigist Hamid has been appointed as the Director General of the Information Network Security Administration, as announced by the Prime Minister’s Office.

In a significant transition, Demeke Mekonen, who has served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, formally relinquished his government positions.

Demeke has held the Deputy Prime Minister post for 11 years, succeeding Degu Andargachew as Minister of Foreign Affairs three years ago.

His tenure includes pivotal roles within the former EPRDF and the current Prosperity Party, where he served as one of the two Vice Presidents.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized that Mekonen’s resignation aligns with the Prosperity Party’s strategic plan to introduce new leadership across various sectors of the government.

The decision reflects the ongoing evolution within Ethiopia’s political landscape, as the government seeks to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities.

These appointments signal a renewed focus on security and diplomacy in line with Ethiopia’s broader national interests and strategic objectives.
