Ethiopia needs over $3 Billion to feed its needy people

Ethiopia calls on international humanitarian organizations to provide over $3 billion to address the needs of its people.

The government has made a stark announcement, indicating that more than $3 billion is necessary to assist the growing number of individuals facing crises within Ethiopia.

In a collaborative effort, the United Nations and the Ethiopian government have released a joint report asserting that $3.4 billion is essential to provide food aid for the increasing population of displaced citizens in Ethiopia, a consequence of various factors including natural disasters, climate change, and conflicts.

Mr. Atalele Abuhai, a senior public relations expert at the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission, disclosed that the current count of displaced individuals in the country stands at 6.6 million.

Alarmingly, this number is poised to rise due to the exacerbating effects of natural disasters, climate change, wars, and other calamities.

Recently, following a two-day visit to Ethiopia, the Director of African Development from Britain announced a donation of $125 million to aid Ethiopian citizens grappling with humanitarian crises.

The director also projected that the number of Ethiopians experiencing severe food insecurity will escalate to 10.8 million in the coming months.

The allocated support from Britain is intended to offer life-saving assistance to three million people, and bolster 75 health institutions to mitigate fatalities stemming from malnutrition and scarcity of essential resources.

Furthermore, the European Union extended a support package of 2.8 billion Birr to assist citizens displaced by drought and conflicts in Ethiopia just a month ago.

Regrettably, the number of individuals requiring aid due to war and drought continues to surge within Ethiopia.

A recent statement from the Ethiopia People’s Ombudsman Institute confirmed the distressing reality that nearly 400 people have succumbed to starvation in the Tigray and Amhara regions, with 21 children being stillborn. These figures underscore the dire humanitarian crisis gripping Ethiopia.

According to the United Nations, over 20 million people in Ethiopia urgently require humanitarian aid as a consequence of drought and conflict.

The Ethiopian Disaster and Risk Management Commission highlighted that 4 million people in the Tigray, Afar, and Amhara regions urgently need food assistance.

However, in a rebuttal to the report issued by human rights institutions, the federal government of Ethiopia has refuted claims of famine, asserting that they are actively supporting citizens in need of food aid.
