The European Union hands over 18 Vehicles to the Ministry of Justice in the framework of its support to the Criminal Justice Reform in Ethiopia.

The European Union supports the Criminal Justice Reform in Ethiopia with 15 million Euro (915 million Birr).

The overall objective of the EU support is increased rule of law, respect for human rights and access to justice for all.

The EU support also aims to enhance coordination, collaboration and cooperation between key criminal justice institutions; to increase effectiveness, efficiency, fairness and accountability of the criminal justice system as well as to improve access to justice for all, in particular the poor, women and other groups in vulnerable situations.

The vehicles were handed over to Gedeon Timothewos, Minister of Justice, by David Krivanek, Chargé d’Affaires a.i of the European Union to Ethiopia, in a ceremony held at the Ministry of Justice.

European Union is one of the biggest partner to Ethiopia and a month ago ,EU and its partners launched a four-year programme to provide support to restore the local economy and build the resilience of micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) that are affected by the crises in Ethiopia, with a focus on the North of the Country, notably the regions of Afar, Amhara and Tigray.

The programme is jointly funded by the European Union, the German Government, and the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Netherlands.

It is implemented by KfW Development Bank, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF).

The 36 million Euro (2.2 billion Birr) programme aims at supporting the economic recovery of MSMEs in post-conflict areas in the North of Ethiopia through improved access to finance.

Various challenges and crises in recent years threaten Ethiopia’s gains in growth and poverty reduction with MSMEs being the most affected.

Additionally, EU has awarded full Masters Scholarship to 48 Ethiopian students for the academic year of 2024-2025 through the EU’s flagship education initiative, Erasmus+ European Scholarship Programme.

The students will spend 2 years full time in prestigious European Universities and will be studying at various higher institutions in 12 European countries.

The Master’s degrees are offered by university consortia, including universities from at least two EU Member States.

The European Union’s Erasmus+ programme aims to enhance quality in higher education through scholarships and academic co-operation between the EU and the rest of the world.

Ethiopia is one of the top beneficiary countries of the Erasmus programme and since 2004, Ethiopia is one of the top 10 performing countries in the world, and amongst the top 5 in Africa both in terms of student selection and application in the Erasmus Scholarship programme.

Since 2010, the European Union has awarded the Erasmus scholarship to more than 600 Ethiopian students.
