Ethiopia Finishes Fourth in the All Africa Athletics Competition

The 2024 All Africa Athletics tournament, hosted by Cameroon, has concluded.

The 23rd African Athletics Championship took place in Douala, the capital city of Cameroon, and saw the participation of 2,500 athletes from over 27 countries over the past six days.

The Ethiopian athletics team, which competed separately in this event, finished in fourth place.

Ethiopia secured a total of 10 medals at the championship: 5 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze. The team fielded 68 athletes in 19 athletic events, finishing behind Nigeria.

The athletes who won gold medals for Ethiopia were:

– Fantaye Belayneh in the women’s 5000m race

– Nibret Melak in the men’s 10,000m race

– Misgana Waquma in the men’s 20km race

– Sentayehu Masre in the women’s 20km race

– Saron Berhe in the women’s 1500m race

The silver medalists included:

– Wubrst Aschal in the women’s 5000m race

– Gemchu Dida in the men’s 10,000m race

– Alemnat Wale in the women’s 3000m race

– Nibret Melak in the men’s 5000m race

Additionally, Gela Ambese won a bronze medal for Ethiopia in the women’s 10,000m race.

The Ethiopian Athletics Federation has provided incentives to the athletes and coaches who won medals in the competition.

South Africa topped the medal table with a total of 20 medals: 7 gold, 5 silver, and 8 bronze.

Kenya finished second with 5 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze medals, making a total of 19 medals. Nigeria placed third with 5 gold, 6 silver, and 4 bronze medals, totaling 15 medals.
