Ethiopian Airlines Signs Agreement to Build Africa’s Largest Airport

Ethiopian Airlines Group, Africa’s leading airline, has signed a technical advisory and consultancy contract with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants (Shair and Partners), in collaboration with the renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, to design and supervise the construction of a Mega Airport City at Abusera in Bishoftu city.

This ambitious project, located just 40 km from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, is set to transform air travel in Ethiopia and across the continent.

The new airport, upon completion, is expected to handle 110 million passengers annually, quadrupling the current capacity of Bole International Airport.

This development will establish Ethiopia as a global aviation hub, enhancing connectivity and driving economic growth while prioritizing environmentally responsible practices.

Ethiopian Airlines’ Group CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tasew, emphasized the significance of the Mega Airport City project in positioning Ethiopia as a key player in global aviation.

He stated, “This project will not only improve connectivity but also stimulate economic development and highlight our commitment to innovation and sustainability. With its exceptional capacity and world-class facilities, this new airport will elevate African aviation and strengthen partnerships, marking a significant advancement for the region’s air travel infrastructure.”

Tariq Al-Qanni, Dar’s Director of Operations in Ethiopia, expressed pride in partnering with Ethiopian Airlines on this visionary project.

“We are privileged to collaborate on this new airport, which will enhance global air connectivity, accelerate Ethiopia’s economic growth, and elevate Ethiopian Airlines to Africa’s most strategic and competitive aviation group.”

The project is set to be completed in phases, with the first phase expected to be operational by 2029.

This initial phase will have the capacity to handle 60 million passengers annually, nearly triple the number currently managed by Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, Africa’s busiest airport in 2022. Ultimately, the new airport will accommodate 110 million passengers per year.

The Mega Airport City will feature a 1.1 million square meter terminal with passenger facilities, 126,190 square meters of airline support facilities, and over 100,000 square meters of cargo and airport support facilities. It will also include an associated airfield and other essential infrastructure.

Strategically located at a lower elevation than the current hub in Addis Ababa, the new airport will offer improved operational conditions for aircraft.

The architectural design will incorporate elements of Ethiopian heritage, creating an iconic structure that embodies sustainability, resilience, and future-readiness.

Ethiopian Airlines is committed to delivering an unparalleled customer experience, ensuring that every journey reflects the airline’s dedication to excellence and innovation.

In recognition of its contributions to the aviation industry, Ethiopian Airlines received a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from U.S. President Joe Biden on August 8, 2024.

The award was presented during the 8th Annual Gala Dinner hosted by the Black IAM organization at the Hilton Atlanta Airport Hotel, honoring institutions and individuals who have made significant contributions to the American people.

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and most successful airline, was recognized for its outstanding service to U.S. citizens over the past 25 years.
