New Scholarships for Africans: World Bank Group Africa Fellowship Program

The Africa region of the World Bank Group (WBG) invites applications for the 2025 WBG Africa Fellowship Program. This opportunity is open to Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.D. graduates who are nationals of Sub-Saharan Africa. The program especially encourages women to apply.

The fellowship aims to empower the next generation of African leaders in development research and policymaking, contributing to the broader goal of reducing poverty across the region.

Application Period: July 10 – August 25 (11:50 PM ET)

How to Apply:

Eligible candidates must be Ph.D. candidates or recent graduates (within three years of completing their Ph.D.) from Sub-Saharan Africa. Please review the full eligibility criteria below.

If selected, you will:

  • Engage in a six-month, in-person fellowship at the WBG headquarters in Washington, D.C., or a WBG country office from January to June 2025.
  • Contribute to WBG operations through research, economic policy, technical assistance, and lending operations aimed at eliminating poverty and promoting shared prosperity.

About the WBG Africa Fellowship Program:

This program targets bright and talented African nationals who are in the final stages of their Ph.D. or have recently completed their degree in fields relevant to the World Bank’s mission. Since its inception, the program has been instrumental in nurturing a pipeline of young African talent interested in careers in development, international institutions, African governments, think tanks, and academia.

Fellows will participate in a six-month assignment at WBG offices, gaining hands-on experience in WBG operations, policy design, knowledge generation, and institution-building for inclusive growth in developing countries. In addition to research and innovation, fellows will work on projects that align with the World Bank’s core mission of poverty eradication and shared prosperity.

Full Eligibility Criteria:

  • Ph.D. Status: Be a recent Ph.D. graduate (within three years of completion) or in the final year of your Ph.D. program.
  • Language Proficiency: Have excellent command of English, both written and verbal.
  • Skills: Possess strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Age Limit: Be 32 years old or younger by January 2025.

Selection Process:

Phase I: A shortlist of candidates will be created based on their specialization and interest. Applicants will be informed of their status regarding whether they’ve been shortlisted.

Phase II: The final selection of fellows will be made in consultation with WBG units. Selected candidates will be notified and, upon acceptance, will be hired as short-term consultants for six months, beginning in January 2025.
