Gideon Timotheos Named Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister

Gideon Timotheos Appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs in Ethiopia

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) has announced the appointment of new ministers to various key positions in the Ethiopian government.

Among these appointments, Gideon Timotheos has been named the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, replacing Ambassador Taye Atskeselasie, who was recently sworn in as the President of Ethiopia.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, in addition to Gideon’s appointment, Mrs. Hana Arayaselasie has been appointed as the new Minister of Justice.

Mrs. Hana previously served as the Commissioner of the Ethiopian Investment Commission and was also the Director of the Ethiopian Postal Service, bringing with her a wealth of experience in public administration and investment promotion.

Furthermore, Selamawit Kasa, formerly the Deputy Minister of Government Communication Services, has been appointed as the new Minister of Tourism.

Selamawit, who had been serving as the State Minister of Government Communication Services, succeeds Ambassador Nasise Chali in this role.

The reshuffle comes following Ambassador Taye’s appointment as Ethiopia’s fifth president. Taye, who held the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs for nine months, has a distinguished career in diplomacy.

He has represented Ethiopia as an ambassador to the United Nations, the United States, and numerous other countries, making him one of Ethiopia’s most experienced diplomats. His recent elevation to the presidency marks a significant chapter in Ethiopian politics.

The presidency became a subject of public interest when Sahlework Zewde, who served as Ethiopia’s first female president for the past six years, posted a cryptic message on her X (formerly Twitter) page three weeks ago, stating, “Silence is my answer.”

This remark sparked widespread debate on social media, and a few days later, house of legislation announced that she leaved office, paving the way for Ambassador Taye to assume the presidency.
