Government Security forces commits unlawful killing and Rape in Amhara – Human Rights Body

Ethiopia Human Rights Commission (EHRC) stated that killings by government security forces in the Amhara region continued.

EHRC has released its investigation report on the ongoing war in the Amhara region.

Since July 2023, all zones in the Amhara region have been under fierce fighting with government security forces and an entity commonly known as Fano, the commission said.

The war is undergoing heavy weaponry and occasional air/drone strikes in some areas, and civilian deaths and injuries have been reported.

Innocent people, including a child under two years of age, were killed by drones and heavy weapon attacks in North Showa Zone, Berehet District, metheh Bla City, Debre Markos, and Denbecha Cities.

In some areas, the commission has confirmed that the residents have been completely displaced from their villages and are in a serious situation.

Unlawful killings carried out by members of the government security forces are still ongoing, among the many civilians arrested by the government security forces on the street or house-to-house, for reasons such as “you support Fano, you give information to Fano, bring a weapon, give information about the direction of the gunshots” and so on.

The commission added that extrajudicial killings are taking place across all places in the region.

Meanwhile, attacks, killings, and arrests against civilian government officials at all levels were carried out by the armed forces.

The commission also announced that the crime of rape is a serious concern, as prisoners and suspects have been attacked by attacks on prisons and police stations in various parts of the region.

Since this statement was issued, at least 200 rape victims have been registered in health facilities including IDPs and health professionals.

The commission said that many public facilities in the region are being used for military services, schools, health facilities, and other private properties that have been vandalized and looted.

The human rights body also urged all parties to focus on resolving the conflict in the region peacefully.
