Safaricom Ethiopia to provide telecom services in Tigray

Safaricom Ethiopia has announced that network and infrastructure development in the Tigray region will begin in the coming weeks.

Safaricom, which entered the Ethiopian market two years ago, has been offering its telecom services to its customers throughout the country except for the Tigray region.

This company, which was unable to provide its telecom services due to the war in northern Ethiopia.

The CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, Wim VanHelleput, went to the Tigray region and discussed with the leaders of the interim administration of the region, the organization announced on its social media page.

In the coming weeks, he held discussions with the interim administration of the region about the possibility of carrying out network and infrastructure development in the Tigray region.

The CEO and other employees traveled to Mekele city and discussed with the Interim Administration President Getachew Reda and the Head of Infrastructure Development Affairs at the Regional Cabinet.

Safaricom Ethiopia, which is providing its Telecom service in more than 25 Ethiopian cities, has announced that the number of its customers has reached millions.

Anwar Sosa, who has been leading the organization for the past two years, resigned from his position last July.

The Belgian former head of MTN Uganda, Wim Vanhelput, has been leading the organization since September, 2023.

Safaricom Ethiopia’s mobile financial service, Mpesa (M-PESA), has been licensed by the National Bank of Ethiopia since last August.

The security situation in Ethiopia, price inflation and internet service interruption in certain regions have affected Safaricom’s profitability.

Safaricom Ethiopia, which has gained more than five million customers in two years, has announced plans to make 98 percent of its customers Ethiopians in the next 10 years.
