USAID resumes humanitarian aid to Ethiopia

The American aid organization announced that it will start food aid all over Ethiopia from next month.

USAID has suspended humanitarian assistance to Ethiopia since last June due to the theft of food aid.

The US humanitarian organization refers to the fact that food aid bought by donors is marketed and sent to foreign countries as well.

USAID decided to resume its support after a series of discussions with the Ethiopian government regarding the distribution of aid.

The organization started providing food aid to refugees in the country last month and from next month it will start providing aid to those seeking support throughout Ethiopia.

The organization announced that Ethiopia has done work to fundamentally adjust its food aid distribution system and donor organizations have agreed to monitor the delivery of aid to the appropriate parties.

USAID’s statement indicated that it allowed donors to ensure that aid reaches the deserving party without being pressured in any part of the country.

Due to a drought that has not been seen in 30 years and the war in the north, more than 20 million people in Ethiopia need food aid.

Ethiopia shelters more than 850 thousand refugees from Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea, and other countries, and 100 thousand Sudanese fled the war and entered Ethiopia.

The World Food Program and the American International Development Organization have cut off their support due to aid theft and have caused great damage.

The US government is the most important among other countries and international organizations in providing the highest humanitarian aid to millions in Ethiopia.

A month ago, aid was given to the refugees in Ethiopia, and Ethiopia agreed not to interfere in aid distribution and warehousing.

Due to the instability in Amhara, Afar, Tigray, and Oromia regions, the number of citizens displaced from their homes is constantly increasing, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission said.

Especially in the Amhara region, following the outbreak of a new war between Fano militants and government security forces, citizens are being displaced from their homes.

The Amhara region, which is the second largest region in terms of population and size, was declared a state of emergency five months ago due to the war, and the internet was cut off.

Although the government claims that the peace situation in the Amhara region is improving, many areas of the region are still under the control of Fano militants.
