Safaricom Ethiopia plans to invest $2 billion for network expansion

Safaricom Ethiopia’s half year performance results of FY2023 indicate a strong performance reinforcing a solid commercial momentum, achieving major
milestones in both mobile (GSM) and M-PESA services.

During the first half of the FY2023, the 07 network and services expanded to 26 large & medium cities & 254 small cities and towns, with a population coverage of 30%.

Major focus and priority have been afforded to infrastructure roll out; to date, 2057 network sites have been erected, with an accelerated monthly pace of 150 new towers.

The company said that, to reach our customers closely, our distribution channel has grown to 53K airtime selling outlets, 5.5K Sim selling agents equipped with Biometric EKYC equipment, and also partnered with 15 banks to provide airtime digitally.

As of 30 September 2023, over 4.1 million customers have subscribed to our GSM services with our fast data becoming popular for its speed and reliability accounting to 4.3GB usage per subscriber.

After receiving the license for Mobile Financial Service in May 2023 and switching on in August 2023, we have registered 1.2 million customers.

And the company made MoU with 12 Local banks have also been integrated with its systems to support the Mobile financial services ecosystem through Super Agency, Retail Agency, and Trust fund account services.

The company’s 50% of the revenue is attributed to data revenue followed by our voice services.

Safaricom the first private telecommunications company operater in Ethiopia plans to invest up to USD 2 billion in the first five years to expand its network and services to all of Ethiopia.

And also the company plans build 10,000- 12,000 network towers in the coming ten years.
