M-PESA Safaricom Launches “Terek Be M-PESA” to Reward Over One Million Customers

M-PESA Safaricom has announced the launch of a 90-day National Lucky Draw Promotion, named “Terek Be M-PESA,” designed to reward over one million M-PESA customers, agents, and merchants.

This promotional campaign is set to run from December 11, 2023, to March 11, 2024.

The primary objective of Terek Be M-PESA is to raise awareness about M-PESA and boost its usage.

Participants, both customers and businesses, stand a chance to win various prizes by receiving unique codes upon registering and conducting transactions on the M-PESA platform.

The enticing prizes include three cars for consumers on a monthly basis, one car for businesses, two Bajajs every two weeks (totaling twelve Bajajs), 360 phones every two weeks (a sum of 2,160 phones), and bonus airtime awarded daily.

Customers are eligible to receive a maximum of 10 unique codes per day, each of which enters them into a draw for the opportunity to win daily, bi-weekly, or monthly prizes.

Unique draw codes will be sent via SMS, with one code issued for every transaction of 20 birr or more on M-PESA. Additionally, customers receive five draw codes upon registering on the M-PESA platform.

Transactions in multiples of 20 birr qualify for earning draw codes, whereas transactions of less than 20 birr do not generate any draw codes for customers and businesses.

In collaboration with the National Lottery Authority, a bi-weekly automated lottery draw will determine the winning customers, agents, and merchants.

Safaricom Ethiopia representatives will contact winners using the number +251-700 700 700, providing instructions on how to claim their prizes, which will be awarded at Safaricom shops in their respective cities of residence.

For airtime prizes, winners will receive an SMS from Terek Be M-PESA, and their accounts will be automatically recharged.

M-PESA, a subsidiary of Safaricom Ethiopia, obtained a Payment Instrument Issuer License from the National Bank of Ethiopia in May 2023 and commenced operations in August 2023, offering swift, convenient, and inclusive digital financial services.

Safaricom Ethiopia’s half-year performance results for FY2023 indicate a robust performance, marking significant milestones in both mobile (GSM) and M-PESA services. The 07 network and services expanded to cover 26 large and medium cities and 254 small cities and towns, reaching a population coverage of 30%.

The company’s focus on infrastructure rollout has resulted in 2057 erected network sites, with a monthly pace of 150 new towers.

The distribution channel has grown to include 53,000 airtime-selling outlets, 5,500 Sim-selling agents equipped with Biometric EKYC equipment, and partnerships with 15 banks to provide digital airtime.

As of September 30, 2023, over 4.1 million customers have subscribed to GSM services, with fast data gaining popularity for its speed and reliability, accounting for 4.3GB usage per subscriber.

Since receiving the Mobile Financial Service license in May 2023 and launching in August 2023, the company has registered 1.2 million customers.

Collaborations with 12 local banks have integrated their systems to support the Mobile financial services ecosystem through Super Agency, Retail Agency, and Trust fund account services.

The company attributes 50% of its revenue to data revenue, followed by voice services.

As the first private telecommunications company operating in Ethiopia, Safaricom plans to invest up to $2 billion in the first five years to expand its network and services across the entire country. Additionally, the company aims to build 10,000-12,000 network towers in the next ten years.
