Innovation, Transformation, and Resilience for Sustainable Development

Lund University invites applications for the graduate-level course Innovation, Transformation, and Resilience for Sustainable Development (7.5 ECTS credits).

This capacity-building course delves into the pivotal role of innovation in transforming economies and fostering social resilience for sustainable development, with a focus on low-income country contexts.

The course is part of the African Union Development Agency-New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD) African Science, Technology, and Innovation Indicators (ASTII) Initiative, aimed at enhancing Africa’s capacity to develop and use Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) indicators for effective development planning and policy at the national, regional, and continental levels.

Course Funding The course is generously funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and AUDA-NEPAD.

Course Content and Timeline

This course explores why certain developing nations have managed to spur economic growth and innovation while others remain stagnant or regressive. Participants will examine:

  • Theoretical perspectives on innovation and technology.
  • The role of innovation policies in achieving resilient and sustainable development.
  • Indicators of innovation and structural change.

Key themes include industrial policy, national innovation systems, technology transfer, economic complexity, market-state relations, trade, governance, resource mobilization, greening strategies, institutional transformation, and resilience against economic challenges.

The course also focuses on practical applications to real-world scenarios, enabling participants to identify public policies and investments that foster both innovation and sustainability.

Course Dates:

  • Online Introduction: 9 April 2025 – 4 May 2025
  • In-person Session in Sweden: 6 May 2025 – 23 May 2025
  • Final Seminar and Online Examination: Last week of June 2025

Number of Participants: 20

Costs Covered by Sida:

  • Program participation and study tours.
  • Accommodation in Sweden.
  • A meal allowance for self-catered meals.
  • International travel to and from Sweden.

Note: AUDA-NEPAD will purchase air tickets for participants on behalf of Lund University. Cancellations or changes will require reimbursement by the candidate or their institution.

Participants are responsible for their own vaccination/COVID-19 tests and personal expenses, including visa fees.

  • A CV detailing relevant professional experience and university studies.
  • A Motivation Letter (following the Lund University template).
  • A Letter of Recommendation from your employer/organization explaining why they endorse your application and how your participation will benefit the organization.
  • An English language certificate (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS) if English is not your native language.
  • Any additional relevant qualifications.
