Hirut Zemene Appointed as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the African Union and ECA

Hirut Zemene, one of Ethiopia’s renowned diplomats, has been appointed as the new Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

Prior to this appointment, Ambassador Zemene served as Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium, where she represented Ethiopia’s interests at the EU and strengthened diplomatic relations with European nations.

Upon presenting her credentials to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, he remarked, “We look forward to benefiting from her skills as a seasoned diplomat with strong prior experience of working with the Union.”

Ambassador Hirut Zemene is an experienced diplomat who has served in various capacities for over 28 years.

Her diplomatic career began as a junior officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, eventually rising to the position of State Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Over the years, she has held several high-profile diplomatic positions, including being Ethiopia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the EU institutions.

Ambassador Zemene has played a crucial role in promoting sustainable peace and stability in the Horn of Africa and the broader region, earning her recognition as a key figure in Ethiopia’s foreign policy.

Her deputy at the African Union and ECA is Ambassador Nebiyu Tedla, the former spokesperson for Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who now serves as Deputy Permanent Representative of Ethiopia.
