Al-Burhan and Abi Ahmed first meeting after the border crisis
In a “closed” meeting.
The Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, met today in the Kenyan capital, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
This is the first meeting between the Sudanese and Ethiopian leaderships, after severe tensions erupted recently over the borders between the two countries, in a crisis that cast a shadow on the bilateral relations between the two neighbors.
In a statement, the Sudanese Sovereignty Council said, “Al-Burhan and the Ethiopian Prime Minister are holding a closed meeting in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi,” without mentioning any additional details.
Al-Burhan and Abiy Ahmed appeared at the Nairobi meeting, exchanging smiles with a hug and shaking hands.
Earlier today, Tuesday, Al-Burhan arrived in Nairobi to participate in the emergency summit of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development in East Africa (IGAD), whose current session is chaired by Sudan.
And at the end of last June, new border tensions erupted between Khartoum and Addis Ababa, against the backdrop of the killing of 7 Sudanese soldiers and a citizen, as Khartoum accused the Ethiopian army of “liquidating them”, which Ethiopia categorically denied.
Subsequently, the language of escalation between the two parties eased, as Al-Burhan said that Khartoum wants normal and balanced relations with neighboring Ethiopia, while Abi Ahmed sent a message to the Sudanese, enumerating the ties that bind them with his country
