Ethiopia’s Coffee Export Sets New Records; Germany, U.S., & Saudi Emerge as Top Buyers

Germany, United States and Saudi Arabia have become the top three destinations for Ethiopian coffee export as the commodity sets new records in the recently concluded 2021/22 fiscal year, authorities say.

Ethiopia secured $1.4 billion dollars revenue from 299,340 tons of coffee shipped to the international market during the fiscal year that ended on July 7.

Both the revenue and volume have grown by 53.82% (or $488.14 million) and 20.54% (or 51,002.66tn), respectively, as compared to the previous year.

This is a record performance in Ethiopia’s coffee export history, announced the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority on Wednesday.

Last week, Director General of the Authority, Adugna Debela called the performance “a huge export milestone” in the coffee sector.

Apart from modernizing the logistics sector, loan availability to exporters, promotion works in international avenues, and strict measures against contraband trade, the authority said the country has taken “strenuous quality measures to enhance its coffee export quality and earnings

“This achievement is a breakthrough for our country and I am optimistic this success will usher us to many more successes,” Adugna said. “The dedication made by all coffee stakeholders eventually paid off.”

Top ten importing nations

The Authority report shows that Germany, the United States and Saudi Arabia were the top three destinations for Ethiopian coffee during the twelve-month period.

Germany imported 21% or 63,499.74tn of the total coffee shipped to the international market, resulting in $250.88 million (18%) in revenue.

The remaining top ten spots were taken by Belgium, Japan, South Korea, China, Italy, UAE and Taiwan, respectively.

Countries in the top ten countries bought 80% of the total coffee Ethiopia exported and covered 81% of total revenue in the budget year.

Ethiopia, which is known as the origin of Arabica coffee, is the fifth-largest coffee producer and exporter in the world.
