M-PESA, Safaricom Ethiopia’s Mobile Financial Services, goes live today three months after receiving the Payment Instrument Issuer License from the National Bank of Ethiopia. In preparation for launch, M-PESA has undergone a rigorous three-month pilot and testing, completed the technical readiness, secured key partnerships with Banks, recruited, trained, and onboarded M-PESA agents. All Safaricom Ethiopia customers are eligible for the services offered by M-PESA and can dial *733# on their Safaricom line both for android and IOS. Mobile money could add more than $5 billion to Ethiopia’s GDP

The International Mobile Communication System Association announced that if the mobile payment system is widely used in Ethiopia, the country's GDP will increase by 5.3 billion dollar. This will happen by the end of 2030 if 60 per cent of the country's population uses the mobile payment system, the association said.  The organization also indicated that it would lift 700,000 people out of extreme poverty and increase tax revenue by 300 million dollar.
