Kuwait Signs Agreement to Hire Ethiopian Domestic Workers

Ethiopia and Kuwait have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Addis Ababa to collaborate on foreign employment initiatives. The agreement was signed by Ethiopia's Minister of Jobs and Skills, Muferihat Kamil, and the Ambassador of Kuwait to Ethiopia, Naif Hannes Al Otaibi. The signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of State for Work and Skills Solomon Soka, Daniel Teresa, Ethiopian Ambassador to Kuwait Saeed Muhammad, Kuwaiti Ambassador to Ethiopia Naif Hannes Al Otaibi, and other senior officials from both countries. Kuwait, the oil-rich Middle Eastern country, has reached an agreement with the government to accept Ethiopian workers who have undergone three months of mandatory training. Following an agreement reached by the governments of Ethiopia and Kuwait the Arab Times reports that a joint labor agreement will be signed in a few days. Kuwait on Wednesday put to death seven prisoners in a rare mass execution in the small, oil-rich nation despite facing international criticism over its plans. The state-run KUNA news agency described those executed as all being convicted of premeditated murder and other charges in the sheikhdom. Ethiopia, Kuwait To Finalize Labour Exchange Agreement

An Ethiopian delegation led by State Minister of Labour and Skill, Nigusu Tilahun, is currently in Kuwait City to work out the labour agreement. “The delegation is expected to finalize the labour exchange agreement between Ethiopia and Kuwait,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday. It is expected to set up legal migration options to citizens seeking job opportunities in Kuwait. “The agreement will help thousands of Ethiopians get employment opportunities in Kuwait,” the ministry added. Upto 35,000 Ethiopian nationals reportedly reside in Kuwait. About 90% of them work as domestic workers.
