Ethiopians have made more than 984 million birr contribution in the last eleven months to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) construction project.
This was announced by the Office of the National Council for the Coordination of Public Participation on the GERD on Thursday.
The office said the contribution was made from Bonds sales both here amd abroad, direct support, sales of pins, and through 8100 SMS.
Since the onset of the GERD, the public has contributed more than 16.7 billion birr via various ways including buying Dam bonds and direct support to Ethiopia’s flagship project
The construction of the dam, solely financed through domestic sources, is now 84% complete and started to generate 375 megawatts of electricity from one of its turbines in February, 2021.
When complete, the multi-billion Dollar project is expected to produce more than 5,000 megawatts of electricity, more than doubling Ethiopia’s electricity output.
