JOB DESCRIPTION
Three positions are available for Ph.D. graduates who aspire to lead excellent public health research in Ethiopia. The positions are full-time, fixed term ending December 2023 with possible extensions of seven months. We will competitively recruit three researchers with a preference for female candidates. The posts will be based at the Institute of Public Health, University of Gondar, within the collaborative Lihiket (Excellence) project, where project partners are the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI). This project will provide a model for institutional capacity development. Emphasis will be on health system research focusing on maternal, neonatal and child health through secondary analysis of relevant large surveys. Successful candidates will be supported to develop a career plan and will be jointly mentored by senior colleagues from the partner institutions. They will benefit from institutional capacity development activities. They will develop funding proposals for health systems research based on local priorities. Together, the three positions will serve as an example for a collaborative post-doctoral training, which will include joint supervision and mentoring with partner organizations, to enhance the ability to write research proposals, manage projects, create international networking and other career development opportunities, and generate evidence. We will competitively recruit three researchers with a preference for female candidates. The successful applicant will have a doctoral degree in public health or related fields, have relevant experience in health system research or public health evaluation or implementation science and have expertise in epidemiological methods. The candidates should have obtained their degrees from 2017 and onwards. They must also be ready to live full-time in Gondar, Ethiopia, and be fluent in English and Amharic. The salary will be paid grossly without taxation $2000 monthly with equivalent to Ethiopian birr accordance with the exchange rate. The post will be subject to the University of Gondar terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 22 working days per year.
Main activities and responsibilities
Knowledge generation
- To undertake high quality research
- To contribute to drafting grant proposals
- To author peer-reviewed publications, including as lead author
- To contribute to Ph.D. student and MSc project supervision, as appropriate to qualifications and experience
- To manage small grants or elements of larger grants, ensuring compliance with good practice in relation to the conduct of research, research ethics principles and other relevant policies of the Institute
- To support current implementation, evaluation, and capacity development activities in collaboration with the Lihiket project partners
Education
- To contribute to the delivery of high-quality, research-informed teaching and assessment in relation to the job holder’s specific subject
- To contribute to the improvement of the quality of the Institute of Public Health education by participating in the development of new and updated learning and teaching materials or approaches
- To plan and perform education and capacity development activities as part of the Lihiket project
Internal Contribution
- To undertake activities that support the Institute of Public Health, University of Gondar and the collaborative Lihiket’s project
- To participate as mentee in the project’s mentoring activities
External Contribution
- To demonstrate good external citizenship by contributing to conference events, journal and grant reviews and similar activities
- To contribute to scientific activities, research dissemination and similar events organized by the Institute of Public Health and its partners such as LSHTM, EPHI and University of Gondar in the Lihiket project
Professional Development and Training
- To draft and complete a professional development plan together with manager and mentor
- To keep up to date with the latest research in the fellow’s academic field
- To participate and contribute to the Lihiket project’s courses and other training activities
Job Requirements
Qualification
The Institute of Public Health, University of Gondar will, as part of the Lihiket (Excellence) project, competitively recruit three post-doctoral positions in health systems research to develop future leaders of public health research in Ethiopia. The postdoctoral fellows will be employees of the University of Gondar and expected to 40 hours per week from Monday up to Friday. The postdoctoral fellows with two years-long appointments will be eligible for up to two weeks per year personal illness, and family care. The fellows who will give birth are eligible for paid maternity leave. The fellows will be eligible 22 working days of annual leave. All fellows are granted time off without loss of pay or stipend for all university holidays observed during the appointment period. The postdoc fellows will also reside at the Institute of Public Health, University of Gondar and relocate to EPHI and LSHTM depends on the deliverables required.

Essential criteria
- A doctoral degree in public health or related fields
- Relevant experience in health system research or public health evaluation or implementation science and with expertise in epidemiological methods
- Contributions to written output including peer-reviewed scientific reports as expected by subject area in terms of types and volume of outputs
- Proven ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively as part of a research team
- Proven ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Evidence of good organizational skills, including effective time management
- Readiness to live full-time in Gondar
- Experience of working in Ethiopia or other low-income country
- Fluency in oral and written English
- Amharic language skills
Desirable criteria
- Experience of research in maternal, neonatal and child health
- Some experience of contributing to research grant applications
- Some experiences of teaching and assessment
- Some experience of supervising and supporting junior researchers and students
