Ethiopian athlete Andualem Shiferaw Wins Lisbon Marathon

Andualem Shiferaw won the 2022 EDP Lisbon Marathon on Sunday (9) as Ethiopian athletes dominate the road race.

Ethiopians took the first three positions as the top five runners in the men’s race broke the 2 hours and 10 minutes barrier.

Athlete Andualem set a new course record to win the title, finishing at 2:05:45.

His compatriots Haftu Teklu and Birhan Nebebew placed second and third in respective times of 2:06:33) and 2:07:04.

Kenya’s Bornes Kitur also took the women’s title in 2:24:17, missing the event record by 3 seconds.

Ethiopian duo of Sorome Negash and Buzunesh Getachew finished second (2:25:57) and third (2:26:01) respectively.

The top six runners in the women’s race finished the course inside 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, at the Chicago Marathon, last year’s winner Ethiopian Seifu Tura relinquished his title to Benson Kipruto, who won the race by setting a new personal best time of 2:04:24.

Seifu finished second clocking 2:04:49 as John Korir settled for third in 2:05:01.

Another Ethiopian athlete Shifera Tamru clocked 2:07:53 to finish fifth.

In the women’s field, Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepngetich successfully defended her title, winning the race in 2:14:18 – just 14 seconds shy of the world record.

USA’s Emily Sisson placed second in 2:18:20 as Kenyan Vivian Kiplagat settled for third in 2:20:52.

Ruti Aga and waganesh Mekasha of Ethiopia finished fourth ( 2:21:41) and fifth (2:23:41), respectively.
