Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority organized a forum in collaboration with an institution called Development Gateway, launched the Ethiopian Tobacco website today to strengthen data-based decision-making.

In Ethiopia, about 46 people die every day and 16,800 people die every year due to tobacco-related issues.

The fact that cigarettes are available in Ethiopia at an affordable price makes the issue even more serious.

In addition to this, the lack of awareness about the negative effects of tobacco use is another problem.

According to a 2016 study, 3.5 million Ethiopians over the age of 15 use tobacco products.

Although Ethiopia’s legal framework is one of the strongest tobacco control laws in Africa and the implementation needs to be strengthened.

This official website will identify information gaps around tobacco and compile information and make it accessible to policy makers and other parties concerned with the issue.
