21 Ethiopians are on hunger strike in Kenya

21 Ethiopians detained at a police station in Kenya have been on hunger strike since last February 2023.

The prisoners started the hunger strike that the implementation of the decision was delayed even though it was decided by the court to return to their country.

On February 10, 2023, the detainees who were detained by the police in an area called Juja Kiambu were ordered by the court to return to Ethiopia, but the police officers have not yet completed the paperwork for the detainees to return to their country.

The detainees who said that they would not eat the food that was offered to them in order to voice their protest.

Officials at Juja Police Station said that the detainees were reportedly suffering from severe fatigue, which put the police in danger.

George Muthonia, head of the Trans-Border Organized Crime Department of the Kenya Police, said that they are closely monitoring the case, will work to get the detainees back to their country as soon as possible, The Star reported.

Nothing has been said yet about the involvement of the Ethiopian Embassy in Kenya in the matter.

A few weeks ago, we reported that 41 Ethiopians and 2 traffickers who’re on their way to cross to South Africa from Ethiopia were arrested in Nairobi.
