Demeke Mekonnen held talks with US’s Molly Phee

DPM, FM Demeke met with US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs in Addis Ababa.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen met with Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs of the United States, Molly Phee.

The twho countries higher officials met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and discussed on bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest.

Demeke said that, “we need to work closely to further expedite and fully implement revitalized Ethio-USA diplomatic engagements.”

The peace process in Sudan must be led and owned by the Sudanese and should be conducted under the auspices of the AU through the IGAD platform, He added.

The US Assistant Secretary of African Affairs, Molly Phee on her part appreciated the Government of Ethiopia for hosting the IGAD Quartet meeting on the situation in Sudan on 10 July 2023.

She stressed the fact that parties to conflict should commit to a ceasefire to effect political solutions and to dispense humanitarian aid.

The IGAD quartet members announced that, to request the East Africa Standby Force (EASF) summit to convene in order to consider the possible deployment of the EASF for the protection of civilians and guarantee humanitarian access.

The Heads of State and Government of the IGAD Quartet Group of Countries met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to discuss the implementation of the IGAD Roadmap for peace in the Republic of Sudan.

IGAD’s quartet member countries strongly condemns the repeated violations of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961) as manifested in the attacks and looting of diplomatic missions and premises in Khartoum.
