Sudanese Refugees in Ethiopia exceeds to 64 thousand

Armed conflict in Sudan has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee to neighboring countries.

According to IOM Ethiopia, as of 11 July 2023, over 64,000 people have arrived in Ethiopia through multiple border crossing points in Amhara, Benishangul Gumz, and Gambella Regions.

IOM has scaled up presence at border crossing points and it’s Migration Response Centre (MRC) in Metema, providing multi-sectorial assistance to arriving people, including health, water and sanitation, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), onward transportation, and tailored protection assistance.

So far, citizens of 71 countries have been displaced from Sudan to Ethiopia and are entering Ethiopia through Amhara, Benishangul and Gambella regions, IOM said.

According to IGAD quartet groups report, the ongoing war in Sudan has so far killed thousands of people, and displaced almost 3 million people including 2.2 million IDPs and nearly 615,000 refugees that have crossed the border into neighboring countries.

Germany has allocated 20 million euro to support Sudanese migrants in Egypt, Ethiopia, Chad and South Sudan.

On the other side, Britain has announced sanctions against firms linked to the rival military groups in Sudan’s increasingly bloody conflict.

A British government minister, Andrew Mitchell, told BBC that, the Sudanese army and paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had dragged their country into a wholly unjustified war.

The sanctions impose an asset freeze on three businesses linked to each side in the fighting.

Washington imposed sanctions at the start of June.
