Addis Ababa to Host Ethiopian Premier League’s Final Games After Four-Year Hiatus

After four years of isolation, the Ethiopian Premier League is set to return to Addis Ababa, marking a significant moment for football enthusiasts across the country.

The 2023/24 Ethiopian Premier League kicked off on October 1, 2023, following the release of the game schedule in August of the same year.

The league’s inaugural match pitted Adama Kenema against the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.

For the past four years, Premier League matches have been held at stadiums in Adama, Diredawa, Hawassa, and Bahirdar due to the renovation of the Addis Ababa stadium, necessitating the relocation of both league and national team games to regional cities.

In a recent announcement by the Ethiopian Premier League Share Company, the final three weeks of the Ethiopian Premier League will take place at the Addis Ababa Stadium.

The schedule for the second round of the 2023/24 Ethiopian Premier League has been unveiled, with matches scheduled at Diredawa Stadium from the 16th to the 22nd week and at the Hawassa University Stadium from the 23rd to the 27th week.

The scheduling of the second round considers the presence of Ethiopian national team games and the upcoming Ethiopian Cup matches.

In the previous season, Saint George clinched the league title with 64 points, followed closely by Bahirdar Kenema with 60 points and Ethiopia Insurance securing third place with 49 points.

On the other end, Arbamench Football Club, Le Getafo Le Gedadi Club, and Ethio Electric faced relegation to the super league.

Individual accolades saw St. George’s Ishmael Agoro emerge as the top scorer of the season with an impressive tally of 25 goals.

As for the ongoing 2023/24 Ethiopian Premier League standings, Mechal Football Club currently leads the league with 33 points, closely followed by the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia with 32 points and Saint George with 28 points, promising an intense competition in the remaining fixtures.
