Japan Supports IOM’s Flood Response in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia

In line with International Organization for Migration (IOM) Global Appeal 2024, IOM welcomes the Government of Japan support towards the flood response in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia that saw more than 1 million people displaced and 5 million affected. According to the Kenya Red Cross, El Niño floods have displaced more than 300,000 people resulting in over 181 deaths. More than 17,000 livestock deaths have been reported in different parts of the country since floods began in November 2023. More than 3.4 million people displaced by conflicts in Ethiopia

International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that, over 3.45 million people were internally displaced in more than 2,500 assessed and accessible sites across 12 regions in Ethiopia. The report finds that, between August and September 2023, more than 3.4 million people displaced by conflicts in Ethiopia and noted that Amhara region was largely uncovered this round due to increased insecurity. IOM Ethiopia’s National Displacement Report 17 reveals that the main causes of displacement were conflict (64%), drought (17%) and social tension (9%). More than 4 million citizens have been displaced in Ethiopia According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 4.3 million Ethiopians were displaced and sheltered in 3,300 centres. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) told Ethio Negari, the number of people migrating to neighboring countries is increasing due to the war between the Sudanese National Army and the Special forces. According to the statement sent by the organization, 51 thousand 840 citizens entered Ethiopia from Sudan until June 19, 2023.
