Ethiopia Commences Election in Four Regions

Elections are being held today in four regional states, namely Somali, Benishangul Gumuz, Central Ethiopia, and Afar, as part of the 6th round of the general election that postponed due to security issues in 2021. The Ethiopian National Election Board (NEBE) announced that voting started at 6:00 AM in this round of the national by-election and re-election. UNDP grants $30 million to modernize Elections in Ethiopia

Ethiopia has signed a $30.2 million financial support agreement to help Ethiopia strengthen its electoral system which will enable it to achieve sustainable democracy. The agreement was signed by the Ministry of Finance of Ethiopia, the National Election Board and the United Nations Development Organization. NEBE warns the Government to safeguard the rights of political parties

National Election Board of Ethiopia issued a press release regarding the parties that were banned from holding their general meeting. In its statement, the board stated that the government security forces prevented the parties from holding a meeting. Election Board Chairperson Birtukhan Mideksa said that Enat Party, Balderas for Real Democracy, and the newly formed Gurage Unity and Justice (Gogot) parties were prohibited by security forces from holding a party general assembly last week. The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has rejected an application to get a registration license for a new party under the Ethiopian Workers’ party (EWP).
